Athletic Training

Physical Education Athletics History

It has been a challenge to find information on the early years and that includes information on the athletic trainers.  Eldon Fuel was an athletic trainer at JCCC from 197? to 1984. We were the Kansans until 1983 which is shown on Fuel’s jacket in the picture.  He is in a few of the team pictures from that time period.

Bill Buese was hired in 1984 as the Head athletic Trainer for all sports at the time.  He has several assistants during his 32 year career at JCCC.  Challenging part Buese recalled was beginning from scratch starting the program by himself.

William Francis Buese

Cindy Campbell, Kathy Lafferty, Cathy Miller, Sharon Silvius Thompson, Lee Hudson are a few of the early assistant athletic trainers.

The Athletic training program for students began in 1985 when Bill Buese was hired to start the program.  Bill headed the program until 2017 and developed a program to train student athletic trainers to gain experience working with all the sports.  Buese was a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and Kansas Athletic Trainers’ Society. He served as president for KATS from 1991-93, and as public relations director from 1995-98.
