In 1969 the athletic program began with Orville Gregory at the helm.  The first year basketball was the only sport but they had cheerleaders, dance team and a pep band to support them.  Pages in the first and only JCCC yearbook the Sunflower document the teams.  They competed in the Eastern Jayhawk Conference and played their games at Shawnee Mission Northwest.

The emphasis was to recruit the local athletes and this was from the very beginning according to interviews of employees in the Visionary Voices.  Carl Snead and Norm Carl were among the individuals who had a hand in helping with athletics in the early years as well as Fred Krebs.

Adding sports as they moved to the campus location, 1973 was the first year for baseball.  Golf started in 197 and  retired in 2016.  ,  Women’s volleyball and basketball began in 1974.  Men’s soccer started up in 1976.  Men and women’s tennis started in 1977 and Glen Moser was the only head coach until the sport was retired in 2016.

Softball had the first season in 1979 with Barbara Gill as the head coach.  Wrestling made a brief appearance and had teams from 1978 to 1983.

Women’s track had Amy Borders participating in 1983 and 1984.  Men and Women’s Track and Cross Country teams began in 1985 as Dave Burgess was hired as head coach to start the programs.  Athletic trainers were hired early as 1978 with Eldon Fuel as one of the first.  Bill Buese was hired as a full time head athletic trainer in 1985.

Women’s soccer was the last sport to be added and began in 1999 and has only had one head coach in Jim Schwab after 10 years as the head coach of JCCC Men’s soccer.

The dance and cheerleading teams have been involved almost every year.  As stated earlier the first year there were cheerleaders, yell leaders and a dance team.  Currently the Golden Girls & Company have been performing at basketball games and competing at Nationals since 2002.
