JCCC Deals On Dental Treatment

I wish I would’ve known this before spending $360 on getting my teeth cleaned: Johnson County Community College provides dental care for students, faculty, and the community. For just $10— cash, check, or debit— you can get preventative teeth cleaning treatment.

Services can include oral examinations, teeth scaling and polishing, fluoride treatment, and other services. This clinic helps Johnson County dental hygiene students get more real-world practice. Only preventive treatment is provided, no restorative or emergency treatment is available.

Because this is a student-supported service and revolves around the dental school students schedules, appointments are not always guaranteed. The clinic runs from Aug. 27-Dec. 3 in the Fall semester. Appointments are available Mondays and Wednesdays between 8 a.m.-5 p.m., according to the website. You can Complete the appointment request form today to get your name on the list. The Dental Hygiene Clinic is located in SCI 210.

Get A Deal On Car Maintenance

“Have you checked your car oil?” It’s the question my dad usually asks whenever I see him. And like most busy college students, I’m guilty of forgetting about this important part of adulthood. But with the rising expense of auto repairs, putting off car maintenance can be costly. The Kelly Blue Book estimates that the average car repair in 2025 costs above $800.

Luckily, JCCC’s Automotive Program offers phenomenal discounts to students and faculty. Whether you need an oil change, brake servicing, or an engine repair, JCCC’s Automotive School withholds labor costs, which is the biggest expense most car owners face. Supervised by professional instructors, automotive students can practice their skills and gain real-world experience while saving you money.

You can find more details here regarding services the program offers, as well as how to schedule an appointment. You can also visit JCCC’S Automotive Technology page for further information.

The Student Lounge Is Hosting Its 5th Annual Sober Fest

On Oct. 8, the Student Lounge is partnering with the Sexual Assault Resource Team (SART) & Drugs and Alcohol Resource team (DART) to host their 5th annual Sober Fest. It’ll be in the GEB building, in room 154 from 3-5 p.m.. The event is meant to bring awareness to a persistent problem for young adults as about 16.6 million 18-25 year-olds reported some level of alcohol consumption within a month in 2024. Alcohol alone causes more deaths in the United States than even illicit drugs and tobacco use. The focus of the event is a “celebration of sobriety,” according to the Lounge staff and aims to create more community as well.

The event will have information on services on campus such as campus police and SART and DART members. Food and mocktails will also be available at the event, but if campus events just aren’t your thing, we have an article with other alcohol-free activities for you.

Board of Trustees Election: How It Impacts Student

You may have received a piece of mail from the Johnson County Election Office regarding several upcoming local elections, one of them being for Johnson County Community College’s Board of Trustees. Before you get too tempted to chuck it into some dark corner and never think about it again, you should consider how much the board impacts your life as a student here at JCCC.

According to the Board of Trustees page on JCCC’s website, “The board sets the budget and local tax levy and governs the college by adopting recommended college policies.” This means that they determine things like whether the average tuition should be lowered or raised, whether programs like CollegeNow will continue to be supported, or whether the college should build another building or a parking garage. These important policies not only affect current students, but thousands of students in the years to come.

The Johnson County Post states, “The trustees who will be elected in November will be involved with several transformational projects that will set the direction of JCCC for the next 50 years. This academic year, JCCC campus leaders will develop a new 10-year facilities master plan to ensure JCCC’s facilities align with students’ needs and support their success. JCCC Trustees will provide input and vote on each phase of the next facilities plan.”

The current version of the master plan is available here.
