Accessify Your Office – Creating an Accessible Environment for Everyone
Description: This interactive training equips faculty and staff with practical strategies to make physical and digital spaces more accessible for individuals of all abilities. Participants will explore common barriers in communication, digital content, signage, and the physical environment—and learn simple, effective ways to remove those barriers using universal design principles.
Through real-world examples, group activities, and self-reflection, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how small changes in layout, language, and design can create a more inclusive campus. Whether you work at a desk, run events, or maintain a website, this session will help you identify opportunities to “accessify” your space and better serve everyone.

Difficult Conversations
This course will review a couple basics when it comes to preparing for difficult conversations. We will discuss various communication pitfalls, how to be assertive, managing your emotions during a difficult conversation and finally a few frameworks to help us have productive and efficient conversations.
Digital Etiquette and Productivity
This course will:
– Revisit fundamental use and etiquette of Outlook, Zoom and Teams
– Overview a collection of productivity strategies for personal and digital use

Naoberskop at Work: The Dutch Approach to Shared Purpose and a Thriving Workplace
Step into the Dutch tradition of naoberschap—a rich, time-honored ethic of neighborliness, shared responsibility, and quiet respect—to reimagine what professional respect and workplace culture can look like. Rooted in the values of humility, directness, and care, this interactive training explores how the principles of Naoberskop (neighbor-sense) can transform everyday interactions, strengthen team dynamics, and build a thriving, inclusive workplace.

This training will cover strategies for developing program and/or office-level outcomes, and how to break them down into actionable pieces using the SMART goal framework. This presentation is a collaborative effort between Staff Development and the Assessment, Evaluation * Institutional Outcomes department.

Over the course of an hour and a half, we will group you with colleagues from across campus to help you find a new perspective on the projects you are working on.

Walk a Mile – Work with difficult people
Every workplace has moments of tension—but what if the key to de-escalating conflict and improving collaboration isn’t just managing others, but understanding yourself? Walk a Mile is an interactive, thought-provoking training that empowers participants to see conflict through a new lens: empathy and perspective-taking.
Through reflective prompts, scenario-based activities, and communication strategies grounded in emotional intelligence, participants will explore how values, beliefs, and triggers influence difficult interactions. Using the practical “5W1H” framework (Who, What, Where, When, How, Why), they’ll learn how to step back from judgment, respond instead of react, and engage more constructively with challenging individuals.

Supervisor Orientation: Navigating Compliance and Performance
(Short: Supervisor Orientation: Policies) (SO)
Description: In this session, Employee relations will review critical components of FMLA, ADA, FLSA, EEO, and everything in between as well as your role in these legal standards as a supervisor. Then Employee Relations will dive into all aspects of the performance management process. This includes PIP’s, Terminations, Disciplinary and Demotion measures, Year-end reviews, goal setting with employees, documentation, coaching and communication. Come prepared with questions to ask of our Human Resource Professionals.
Supervisor Orientation: Recruiting and Retaining People
(Short: Supervisor Orientation: People) (SO)
Description: In this session, we will go over every part of the employee life cycle from the different types of separations and their processes, preparing for a new position, putting together a hiring committee, and onboarding. Then be ready to work together with Staff Development to learn more about the importance of engaging your employees. This session will include various methods of engagement, best practices, recognition, team building, difficult conversations, change management and mental health care for you and your employees. Come prepared with questions to ask of our Human Resource Professionals.
Critical Skills for Supervisors (KCPDC)
Description: This session is designed to introduce the major competencies and skills necessary to maximize supervisor effectiveness, such as accountability, delegation, employee engagement, motivation, and critical communication.
Objectives: After this training, participants will be able to:
· Describe the major competencies integral to supervision
· Identify supervisory behaviors that positively affect employees’ attitudes and performance
· Identify the primary components to effective and critical communication

Making New Employees Feel Welcomed (KCPDC)
Description: Talent management means hiring the right person for the job and successfully onboarding the new hire. When employees feel part of the organization, retention and productivity are improved. This requires more than a day or a week of orientation. It could take months or a year for the new employee to form social attachments and understand the organization’s culture, and managers are key to ensuring the success of new employee onboarding programs.

Performance Management (KCPDC)
Description: This session is designed to help supervisors manage the performance of their teams from setting expectations, giving feedback and finally conducting a formal performance appraisal. The exceptional supervisor is one who can clearly communicate expectations about the quality, quantity, and timeliness of work to be produced and then provide consistent and objective feedback to the employee about his or her success in meeting those expectations. The session is very interactive with a variety of small and large group activities. Participants will come to understand inclusive approaches to performance appraisals.
Objectives: After receiving this training, participants will be able to:
· Understand why it is appropriate and how to set performance expectations
· Recognize and apply sound principles of giving (and receiving) feedback
· Explain why performance appraisals are often viewed as a negative experience
· Identify means to diminish the fear and anxiety that often accompany performance review
· Identify strategies for handling not only positive appraisals (the easy ones), but also those requiring corrective action (the difficult ones)
· Apply the strategies for conducting performance appraisals to any appraisal instrument currently in use
Inclusive Leadership: Developing Intracultural Awareness for Effective Team Building & Innovative Outcomes (KCPDC)
Description: Cultivating intercultural awareness for inclusive leadership moves the participant beyond simplistic
understandings of diversity toward a working understanding of equitable and adaptive leadership frameworks. By developing/expanding their own cultural self-awareness, participants will sharpen their leadership edge through inclusive practices that transform the delimiting effects of group status. Participants will engage in skill building strategies, develop an Inclusive Leadership Action Plan, and actively explore inclusive leadership concepts.
After receiving this training, participants will be able to:
· Understand the dynamics of organizational culture (micro and macro impacts)
· Explore baseline concepts and techniques to manage biases and assumptions in one’s self and others
· Demonstrate knowledge of tools/skills for communicating across differences and influence inclusion across department/team
· Describe equitable approaches and best practices for leading diverse teams
· Link Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts to department/organizational strategy though DEI action and accountability planning
· Share resources for additional skills building and professional development
Legal Aspects of Supervision (KCPDC)
Description: This course is designed to familiarize supervisors with the sources of the law, unlawful employment discrimination, justification and defenses to various employee complaints, and consider preventive measures and proper language. It includes a review of sexual harassment and steps a supervisor can take to prevent it. After taking this workshop, supervisors will be aware of the varied complex responsibilities.
Objectives: After receiving this training, participants will be able to:
· Describe the general aspects of the law relating to the workplace, e.g., structure of the court system, civil vs. criminal liability, common law vs. statutory law
· Identify the federal laws that apply to the workplace – Title VII, the American Disabilities Act (ADA), the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
· Understand issues in negligent hiring – the interview process and background checks: What can you ask? What should you ask? Performance evaluations and disciplinary actions/dismissals
· Understand issues in negligent supervision – performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, and dismissals
· Know some methods to prevent workplace violence
· Recognize discrimination in the workplace – what are the protected classes?
· Understand the types of sexual harassment – quid pro quo and hostile work environment
· Understand inclusive approaches to legal aspects of supervision
Decision Making and Problem Solving (KCPDC)
Description: This class focuses on three skills of a supervisor: decision making, problem solving, and applying judgment. It is designed to explore each of these concepts in some depth and offer various ways to consider their application. The content will guide the participant through the topics and offer a series of guidelines to consider. Practical information will be shared and supplemented with handouts which will be good resources for use after class. Participants will come to understand the impact of diversity on decision making and problem solving.
Objectives: After receiving this training, participants will be able to:
· Understand the concepts of decision making, problem solving, and judgment
· Know three ways (unilateral, democratic, consensus) to make a decision
· Understand several techniques and/or strategies for problem solving
· Analyze the components of judgment
· Understand the impact of diversity on problem solving and decision making
The Blueprint of Trust: Layering Foundations of Collaborative Workspace (KCPDC)
Description: The “Blueprint of Trust: Layering Foundations for Collaborative Workspaces” course delves into the fundamental principles of building and maintaining trust.
This course serves as an exploration of key concepts and practical applications, participants will learn how trust acts as a cornerstone for effective collaboration, the nuances of trust-building, and strategies for embedding trust into their workspace culture.
Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Define Trust in Workspaces: Understand the key components of trust and how it differs from mere confidence or reliance.
2. Recognize Trust Layers: Identify the multiple layers of trust in collaborative settings, ranging from foundational trust to task-specific trust.
3. Establish Foundational Trust: Develop strategies to build a foundational level of trust among team members and between leadership and staff.
4. Implement Trust Mechanisms: Utilize tools and mechanisms that foster trust, from transparent communication systems to feedback loops.
5. Address Trust Breaches: Recognize signs of diminishing trust and implement strategies to address and rectify them effectively.
6. Enhance Collaboration Through Trust: Understand the direct relationship between trust and collaboration efficiency, and employ strategies to harness trust for improved team performance.
7. Foster an Inclusive Trust Culture: Promote inclusivity and diversity in trust-building measures to ensure every team member feels valued and understood.
8. Reflect and Adapt: Regularly review and modify trust-building strategies based on evolving team dynamics and challenges.
Conflict Resolution (KCPDC)
Description: The purpose of this session is to provide individuals with the knowledge to recognize causes of workplace conflict, how to facilitate resolution of conflict, and how to manage the work relationships once the conflict has been resolved. Individuals are provided a short assessment to identify their preferred conflict style and an understanding of other styles.
The Seven Most Common Mistakes Leaders Make (LAAL)
Description: This session focuses on helping leaders make a shift from self-centered to other-centered thinking. It helps leaders become more mindful of how they treat employees while getting the work accomplished.
Objectives:
§ Why effective leadership is important
§ Key models, skills and tendencies related to leading employees
§ Information and examples related to the seven most common leadership mistakes
§ Your behaviors that may contribute to leadership mistakes you or others in your organization are making
§ Strategies for overcoming each of these leadership mistakes
§ Skills and tools for communication, feedback, and inspiring employees
Be a Great Coach (LAAL)
Description: Coaching has become an increasingly popular and important leadership skill for developing people and maximizing their performance. This workshop provides leaders with a comprehensive understanding of coaching, and it equips them with a versatile process for coaching for growth and development.
Objectives:
§ Explore coaching as a highly effective “style of communication”
§ Understand how and why coaching works
§ Examine the two different types of coaching you do as a leader
§ Practice foundational communication skills that make you a great coach
§ Learn a process for effectively coaching your teams and others at work
Communicate by Design (LAAL)
Description: Many leaders find it challenging to coach effectively when employees or other fall short of expectations. This workshop provides leaders with a proven, versatile coaching process for conducting a firm yet respectful conversation to help people get back on track.
Objectives:
§ Learn how to confidently and competently Coach for Improvement when people are falling short of expectations
§ Explore two key factors that can make this type of coaching difficult
§ Examine and overcome common pitfalls when you Coach for Improvement
§ Learn how to State the Facts clearly, directly, and respectfully
§ Practice and apply the six-step coaching process to Coach for Improvement
Create A Culture of Engagement (LAAL)
Description: This workshop helps leaders understand the impact they have on employee engagement and introduces them to six strategies to create a culture of engagement.
Objectives:
§ Understand the powerful link between employee engagement and business results
§ Have a clear definition of what employee engagement is and why it is important
§ Understand your own individual level of engagement and the engagement level of your team
§ Implement six strategies that you, as an individual leader, can use to create a culture of engagement
§ Have tips and tools you can use to increase your success as an individual leader relative to employee engagement
Create Productive Meetings (LAAL)
Description: Meetings often waste time and are painful for participants – not because they’re not important, but because they’re mismanaged. This workshop arms leaders with helpful tips, tools, techniques, and strategies for facilitating, influencing and supporting highly productive meetings.
Objectives:
§ Identify key elements of a productive meeting
§ Structure meetings in ways that heighten their effectiveness
§ Employ meeting processes for better participation and communication
§ Enlist three proven methods to discuss key issues in meetings
Supporting Yourself and Others Through Change (LAAL)
Description: Change is constant. Rationally, it makes sense: organizations are either changing or dying. Fundamentally, employees get it. So why is it so difficult to deal with the actual changes?
Objectives:
§ Be familiar with the Rational Change Model as an illustration of why organizational change is necessary
§ Identify current change-related challenges affecting you and your team
§ Know the predictable human dynamics of change
§ Be familiar with the Emotional Change Model and how to communicate during change
§ Identify the four types of emotional resistance to change in yourself and others
§ Prepare and conduct a change-related coaching conversation by using a six-step Coaching Through Change Planner
Focus Your Team (LAAL)
Description: The day-to-day whirlwind of activity makes it very difficult for leaders to ensure that their teams are working on what’s most important. In Focus Your Team, participants explore methods and strategies for enhancing team effectiveness and productivity to drive the business forward.
Objectives:
§ Understand the importance of “focus” for maximizing team productivity
§ Know who your team’s customers are and understand how that knowledge defines the team’s “mission of service”
§ Be armed with strategies for helping team members think differently about how and where they apply their efforts to priorities and projects
§ Have a team strategy and support tools you can use with team members for focus, productivity and accountability
Maximize Performance (LAAL)
Description: This workshop provides participants with skills and techniques to enhance their effectiveness in maximizing employee performance, day in and day out. Participants explore three key components for maximizing performance and develop action plans to increase team clarity, motivation, and effectiveness.
Objectives:
§ Be familiar with the ongoing, interdependent activities needed to maximize employee performance 365 days
§ Understand how to define and clarify expectations and goals for performance
§ Know how to write SMART goals
§ Recognize the importance of establishing consistent monitoring strategies every day to ensure that employees are successful
§ Explore ways to apply your coaching skills when reviewing and discussing performance
Resolve Conflict (LAAL)
Description: One of the most common shortcomings of a leader is the inability or unwillingness to resolve conflict. This is a skill area that needs to be developed and practiced as conflicts arise before the impact escalates in terms of many key factors like retention, engagement, productivity, and profitability. The purpose of Resolve Conflict is to help leaders move from avoidance or mishandling conflict to handling it productively, with confidence and competence.
Objectives:
§ Understand the impact of conflict in the workplace
§ Understand conflict and the four common reasons it occurs in organizations
§ Be familiar with the benefits of handling conflict productively
§ Complete the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument, understand the model and apply the five conflict modes to workplace conflict situations
§ Be introduced to a Mediation Meeting Planner designed to mediate conflicts between two other people or teams
Solve Problems, Make Decisions (LAAL)
Description: Working in an organization involves two crucial skills – solving problems and making decisions. Yet, leaders often struggle with how to help others become better at these crucial skills. In this workshop, we explore leadership strategies, problem-solving methods, and a complete problem-solving process that leaders can use to teach and guide others through problem solving and decision making.
Objectives:
§ Explain the fundamental nature of problem solving & decision making, & the relationship between them
§ Identify leadership strategies for helping others become better problem solvers and decision makers
§ Employ a five-step process for problem solving and decision making that you can use on your own, with other individuals one-on-one or in groups
§ Use, teach and demonstrate new methods for brainstorming, creative thinking, and decision making
