Don’t Quote Me!

“To be, or not to be, that is the question,” is an often quoted Shakespearean line. I love a good quote, but am often guilty of not knowing the origin of the quote. So I thought I would research some of my favorite assessment quotes and share them with you; including a few new ones from our keynote speakers for our Assessment Matters Conference on May 5, 2017.

Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” This quote is often wrongly credited to Albert Einstein; however, the author is unknown.

Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” Benjamin Franklin

Ultimately, the most fruitful way to learn if the conclusions that we have drawn from assessment data are correct is to try to change something and see what happens. Drs. Charles Blaich and Kathleen Wise, keynote speakers for the 7th Annual Regional Community College Assessment Conference hosted by JCCC in Regnier Center on Friday, May 5, 2017.  Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with breakout sessions starting at 9:00 am.  You will want to stay until the last session which is a panel presentation on Assessment today and tomorrow.  The conference wraps up at 4 p.m.

My favorite quote thus far from our keynotes gets to the heart of who they are, “we are not higher education researchers but are, in fact, college teachers from different areas who are interested in improving student learning. If you want to know more, come hear them present “Between the rock and the hard place: Lessons from practitioners who’ve navigated external demands and internal resistance to improve student learning.”

Driven by regional and specialized accreditors, state and federal government, foundations and other external stakeholders, assessment is now a fact of life. In this keynote, we will review the obstacles  assessment leaders encounter and the strategies they use to try and make assessment matter as much for their students as it does for meeting the requirements of external stakeholders.

Dr. Blaich is the director and Dr. Wise the associate director, Center of Inquiry at Wabash College and the Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium (HEDS). HEDS assists member institutions in planning, management, institutional research, decision-support, policy analysis, educational evaluation, and assessment. Come join us to hear our featured keynote as well as colleagues from the region present in three breakout sessions, including a Q & A with our keynote speakers.
