Every campus needs a Kate Allen! She does amazing work to support our students. She works hard to advocate for the issues that impact our students at the state and federal levels. She has worked with our office on a couple of issues this year and we cannot thank her enough. Our students thank her too! Kate, you’re amazing.

Amanda Chung, ESL Instruction Continuing Education – Nominated by Georgia Deming
Amanda has created supplemental materials for ESL students in preparation for on-line classes this fall.  She has also created tutorials for teachers and students in various aspects of digital literacy to facilitate a better on-line teaching experience for her colleagues and learning experience for students.

Kathy Gill, Coordinator Healthcare, Continuing Education – Nominated by Zach Gredlics & Tim Frenzel
Each year, Continuing Education’s healthcare programs must submit a report to the Kansas State Board of Nursing that requires pulling enrollment data, evaluations, and other paperwork that takes a significant amount of work. Kathy Gill took on the time-consuming task of pulling and compiling required information to submit to the organization covering our 2019-2020 program year, allowing Kansas nurses to gain the continuing education credit they need to renew their licenses and remain active within the local healthcare industry.

Sherri Hanysz, Associate Registrar, Records and Registration – Nominated by Kim Steinmetz
Sherri was cleaning up imaging and found old records that needed to be attached to a file. She found one that only had a first name. She looked through countless records to ensure we could match the document to the student. It was incredible and extremely helpful. Sherri has amazing technical skills and always supports others with her gifts. We are thankful!

Marc McCann, Manager Executive Chef, Dining Services – Nominated by Jean Keating
Marc has put together an online menu for all to enjoy.  The menus are constantly evolving to include all of the needs of the customers who enjoy a meal.  The customers’ needs include gluten-free, vegetarian, and other needs for those with special diets.  No ask is too much for him to tackle.  It’s been a joy to assist with this new venture!  Thank you, Marc!

Thomas A. Parra, Senior Tutor, Math Resource Center, Academic Student Support – Nominated by Sally Ann Brown
Thomas Parra has been an invaluable employee during this move from the Math Resource Center to the new area in the library. Thomas has packed, unpacked, organized, and moved items into place. In addition, he has been available to come in to do one on one math tutoring here on campus during this difficult time.

Michelle Rico, ESL Instructor, Continuing Education– Nominated by Georgia Deming
Michelle has been working with the ESL teachers and creating training materials for Google classrooms which will be implemented this fall as part of our online classrooms.  Adding Google classrooms to Zoom will provide a better learning experience and help with student engagement.

Monica Roberts, Digital Technician, Document Services– Nominated by Melissa Nemmers
Monica has done a great job pitching in and helping with all the Covid-19 signage. She has been working extra days to make sure they all get finished. Monica, Kevin & Mike have all worked together to get the work done across the campus.

MargE Shelley, Assistant Dean Enrollment Management, Student Success and Engagement – Nominated by Kim Steinmetz
MargE has been responsive and supportive to IISS as we needed her this week. She has helped us bridge gaps that need to be filled and she has supported us. Not only that, but she continues to inspire us when things are hard. She is a leader that we all aspire to be like. She always is positive, caring, empathetic, and accessible. Despite having a million things to accomplish, she always makes time and listens. Her empathy and care for others is one of her greatest strengths. MargE is a wonderful asset to the College and we’re thankful for her leadership!

Malinda Bryan Smith, Anthony Funari, and Selina Wu are amazing resources who are all deeply committed to their work.  They seize every opportunity to make us aware of grants to extend our program’s and JCCC’s ability to make a difference for our students and our community.  They are also eager to work with us every step of the way, from concept development, to research data supporting the need, to final editing to make our proposals as compelling as possible.  When we get discouraged, they challenge us to keep pushing.  The final product is always greatly enhanced by their experience and collaboration.

In preparation to teach at least significant portions of JCAE fall classes online, we requested laptops for several of our instructors, configured specifically for the effectiveness and the convenience of the instructors.  Chris followed through well to assure the availability of the devices, and Kaitlyn and Nathan configured them to our specifications.  The team is even going the extra mile to facilitate the swap of the borrowed laptops with their replacements.  We appreciate the customer focus and dedication of Chris, Kaitlyn, Nathan and Brett!

IISS received shocking news Monday regarding enrollment restrictions for international students. All staff members jumped to create a plan and a strategy to address the situation. Each person played a key role in crafting and responding to the needs of our students and each other. This week has been strenuous, vulnerable, and scary. The flip side is we’ve seen our strength, our hearts, and our passions guide our professional calling. This team would do anything for students, and it is such an honor to work alongside the IISS team!
