Journalism Scholarships


Robert J. Helmer Strategic Communications Scholarship

The Robert J. Helmer Strategic Communications Scholarship recognizes an outstanding Journalism student. To qualify for this scholarship, you must:

  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.0.
  • Provide a copy of your unofficial transcript.
  • Provide your Student ID, phone number(s), and all mailing addresses (current and permanent).
  • Provide a list of the journalism/media communication classes you have taken so far and the names of your professors.
  • Be enrolled in at least two Journalism classes (JOUR 125 Fundamentals of Advertising, JOUR 130 Principles of Public Relations, or JOUR 225 Promotional Writing).
  • Have a minimum grade of “B” in Journalism courses.
  • Submit a letter of introduction describing reasons for considering a major in communication, reasons for applying for the scholarship, reasons for deserving the scholarship, and the benefits that the scholarship will provide.


Rose Family Scholarship

The Rose Family Scholarship recognizes an outstanding Journalism student. To qualify for this scholarship, you must:

  • Provide your Student ID, phone number(s), and all mailing addresses (current and permanent).
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.0.
  • Submit a copy of your unofficial transcript.
  • Provide a list of all journalism/media communication classes you have completed so far and the names of your professors.
  • Be enrolled in a minimum of one departmental Journalism course during the semester for which the scholarship will be awarded. (Internships are not included.)
  • Have a minimum grade of “B” in the department’s course(s) on the day the scholarship is granted and complete the course(s) with a minimum grade of “B.”
  • Complete the JCCC scholarship application.
  • Provide a letter of introduction describing reasons for applying for the scholarship, reasons for deserving the scholarship, and benefits the scholarship will provide.
  • Provide one or more letters of recommendation from current journalism professor(s).
  • Provide a description of reasons for interest in the journalism/media communication field, your plans after leaving JCCC, your plans after finishing your education, and your employment goals for the future.
  • Interview with the Journalism and Media Communications Department Chair and one additional full-time department professor.
