Honors Students

Baker University

Do you accept transfer students in your Honors Program/College?

Yes

How do transfer students apply to your Honors Program/College?

Sophomores, juniors, and transfer students who have maintained a 3.30 GPA, have no instances of academic misconduct, and are in good standing with the Office of Student Affairs will have the opportunity to apply for admission to the honors program via essay. The decision to admit these students will be made by a faculty council.

How selective is your application process?

Very. Because of high academic standards and additional workload, fewer than a dozen students graduate from the honor program annually.

Do you have any honors-specific scholarships or awards?

Not as of now.

Does your institution offer a Phi Theta Kappa scholarship? If so, how much may transfer students count on? What are the restrictions?

Yes – Baker offers a $1,000 transfer scholarship for PTK members.

What are your Honors Program/College completion requirements?

To graduate from Baker University with honors, students must complete the following sequence:

  •  3 credit hours of salon (HN101, HN 201, HN 301)
  • two honors contracts outside of their major
  • one honors contract within their major
  •  a Primary Texts course

No two honors contracts may be completed in the same academic year.

Sophomores and transfer students enrolling as sophomores who enter the program may have their BK 101 course waived but will need to complete the rest of the requirements.

Students who transfer as upper-classmen and wish to participate must have been enrolled in an honors program at their prior institution. Upper-classmen applying to the Honors Program must have completed honors classes at their previous institution.

The Honor Director will decide how many honors contracts the successful applicant will need to complete to graduate the Honors Program.

Do you accept community college honors course credit or experiences toward completion of your Honors Program/College?

Yes – see previous question for more detail, but decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis depending on the student’s experience. Transfer students discuss their progress with the Honors Director upon acceptance.

What is the best contact for questions?

Prof. Ryan Gibb at rgibb@bakeru.edu

When do you recommend that students apply?

Eligible freshmen are offered to apply in the first four weeks of the fall semester, and sophomores and juniors may also apply in the fall.
