Cultural Events

The Honors Program seeks to expose students to various experiences they may not have an opportunity to participate in otherwise and to challenge students to reconsider or reaffirm long-held assumptions.

One way we encourage students to do this is by attending cultural events. A cultural event is defined as an event designed to showcase a specific groups’ practices, behaviors, and expressions (music, art, food, dress, etc.).  The event highlights the shared values, beliefs, and traditions, and way of life of a particular group.

Attending 8 cultural events will get you 2 points towards honors completion after submitting a reflection  (one reflection incorporating all eight events).

Here are some ideas:

  • Visit the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art
  • Attend a ballet, theater production, or opera
  • Visit a museum
  • Attend a festival
  • Watch a foreign film (the film should be in subtitles)
  • Attend a scholar’s presentation on campus
  • To learn about more activities, be sure to check the weekly bulletin on Mondays.

Students are free to choose events according to their interests and goals; there is not one all encompassing list to choose from. Question about whether or not an event counts as cultural? Email Melissa.
