Healthcare Information Systems – HCIS

A recent CSIT Healthcare Information Systems program graduate working for Oracle Cerner recently earned a promotion to Technical Analyst.

HCIS and MIRM programs have twelve students participating in this semester’s Health IT mentorship program where students are matched with Health IT professionals from the Greater Kansas City area to explore professional goals and career pathways and review and practice effective job-search strategies.

Special Events

The Medical Information & Revenue Management (MIRM) department hosted its Fall Advisory Board Meeting on Friday, October 13, 2023, in conjunction with the Healthcare Information Systems (HCIS) department. Faculty shared current program metrics and provided updates on the program’s digital advertising campaign. The Board discussed the college’s strategic plan, and how it might be supportive of these initiatives. The next meeting will be held Spring 2024.

MIRM 148: Medical Coding Internship students participated in a LinkedIn workshop with Joanie Beaulieu from the Career Development Center. Students learned the importance of a strong LinkedIn profile as they begin to apply for medical coding positions. Students were encouraged to take advantage of free campus resources, including the photo booth in the JCCC Co-Lab. Patti Frank, Consultants in Practice management and MIRM Advisory Board member, presented E&M Coding 2024 to MIRM Coding III students on Tuesday, October 10, 2023. Ms. Frank reviewed the current process to apply Evaluation and Management (E&M) codes and discussed the importance of proper code application. Students were able to put this information into practice by walking-through several fictitious patient charts.

Significant Student Accomplishments

Maddie Goscha, MIRM student, successfully passed the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) credentialing exam. This is a nationally recognized certification, awarded by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).

Alexa Summers gave a speech at Union Station hosted by Science City’s STEM Seminar on October 14th about her personal career path, the versatility of computer science, and how to explore career options.

On November 9th, Alexa Summers will be speaking again to the community, about her career path and how to get into computer science, at Linda Hall Library.
