Medical Information & Revenue Management (MIRM)

MIRM 148: Medical Coding Internship students participated in the CSIT Reverse Career Fair on Friday, April 22, 2022. Students met with employers and/or JCCC instructors and had the opportunity to practice their interview skills, including sharing of their “elevator pitch,” resume, and LinkedIn profiles. Students concluded the event with much-appreciated advice – and a few with requests to apply for positions!

 

MIRM faculty participated in the KCKPS CTE Spring Advisory Meeting on Tuesday, April 26, 2022. CTE initiatives and pathway highlights from the 2021-2022 academic year were shared, including presentations by KCKPS students!

 

MIRM faculty participated in the JCCC STEM Retreat on Thursday, May 19, 2022. Amanda Kraus (MIRM department chair) and Lori Brooks (HCIS department chair) presented a poster presentation re: the Health IT Career Mentorship Program. This program began as a Carl Perkins grant in 2019, connecting new HCIS and MIRM students with local industry professionals. It continues as a semester-long program, creating individualized opportunities for students – and setting them up to appreciate the benefits of career mentorship and professional networking throughout their educational and professional career.

 

Seven (7) MIRM students completed the Medical Coding Certificate program in May 2022. These students include: Jeanan Brown, Jessica Davis, Jaleh Esfandiary, Chelsea Long, Katherine Mendonsa, Amelie Scheller, Hasina Shahadara. Congratulations!

 

Information Technology-Networking and Cybersecurity

Faculty member Andrew Lutz will be presenting at the CAE Symposium in June on Establishing New K-12 Pathways. The department recently developed a pathway with Blue Valley Schools. The pathway provides students the opportunity to complete the JCCC Cybersecurity Certificate program tuition-free alongside their high school education. Successful students will receive both their diploma and Cybersecurity Certificate upon graduation from high school.

 

The department has partnered with Microsoft to join the Microsoft Learn for Educators Program (MSLE). MSLE provides academic institutions access to official curriculum and teaching tools. Through our Imagine Academy status and MSLE, we are offering our students official Microsoft curriculum and labs this Fall 2022 semester at no cost.

Computer Science (CIS)

CSIT Hosted Code Day which is a 24-hour, international computer programming event. This event was initiated by JCCC student Ashraf Musleh and supported by CSIT faculty Trisch Price, Alexa Summers and Rachel Singh. Twenty students aged 13 through 25 participated and worked in teams of one to six. Some teams working on creating games others worked on web-based projects. Small workshop sessions were held during the event to teach programming fundamentals. The weekend was sponsored by T-Mobile who provided food and inflatable beds for those who wanted some sleep.

Health Information Systems (HCIS)

Congratulations to Healthcare Information Systems Adjunct Professor Suzie Foley RN, BSN, CEN on her recent success in qualifying as a Certified Emergency Nurse.  Suzie has been an Emergency Department nurse on the front lines of the healthcare defense team during the COVID crisis.  Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN®) Is issued by the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing.

The Cybersecurity Competition in the IT 239-Ethical Hacking course has concluded, and we have two winners which both selected the CompTIA PenTest+ voucher as their prize. We are supporting students in their effort to attain certification.

 

Faculty member Andrew Lutz is working on a Carl Perkins grant which aims to help a group of 6 students become CompTIA A+ certified. Passing two exams is required for certification. 5 of the 6 students reported passing the first certification exam. Students will be attempting the second exam within the next month.

HCIS and MIRM faculty members Amanda Kraus, Lori Brooks and Nan Abbot were selected to present at NISOD’s 2022 International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence in May 2022.  The title of their presentation is ‘Building Academic Division & Professional Organization Mentorship Program: Program Model, Easy Implementation and Sustainability Steps’.

 

Cindy Lingerfelt, HCIS Associate Professor, attended the 2022 HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society) National Conference in Orlando, FL.

 

Health IT executive and JCCC HCIS Adjunct Professor Heidi Waldschmidt has a new leadership position with Tivity Health.  Since 2016, Heidi has shared her healthcare IT expertise with JCCC HCIS students. The HCIS program immerses students in a variety of industry relevant topics including the recent addition of our Healthcare Data Analytics course.

 

JCCC HCIS alumna and HCIS student mentor Somya Sriram passed the Certified Associate in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CAHIMS) exam sponsored by HIMSS. This credential demonstrates Somya’s professional knowledge in healthcare information and management systems to potential and current employers.

Information Technology-Networking and Cybersecurity

Andrew Lutz is working on a grant with Moraine Valley Community College to study existing designation programs nationally at the K-12 level. Results will be used by the NSA/DHS to inform the development of a potential cybersecurity designation program.

The department provided funding for 10 students to compete in the National Cyber League competition for the Spring 2022 semester. The competition provides an online platform where students can practice cybersecurity challenges.

The department is in the early phases of developing a Cloud Certificate. Supported by industry, this will provide students foundational knowledge in major cloud leader such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, and Google

POSITION SUMMARY: 

We are looking for a creative and detail-oriented front-end web graphic design intern to create and maintain a relevant aesthetic for our websites. This internship role is responsible for working with other designers and web developers to ensure that the website is functional with current products, information, and imagery. This includes maintaining image libraries and creating inventory uploader files in excel to use across multiple platforms.

To be successful in this role you must have a good understanding of front-end and back-end coding fundamentals primarily in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (preferred or currently learning JavaScript). A top-notch web graphic designer is both technically minded, and design oriented.

THE WEB GRAPHIC DESIGN INTERN’S PRIMARY DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: 

  • Prepare images to coincide with product uploads, social and blog posts.
  • Working with developers and designers to create a design strategy.
  • Editing and renaming images for websites.
  • Choosing fonts and color schemes for websites.
  • Testing sites to ensure that they are working correctly.
  • Keeping abreast of image editing software innovations.
  • Maintaining coding knowledge through extra training.
  • Completing other projects as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Excellent computer knowledge for both MAC and PC environments. (Will be MAC based)
  • Working toward a degree in web development, graphic design, or a related field.
  • Must be proficient in basic design programs including Adobe Creative Suite. (Especially Photoshop)
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and administrative skills.

National and Local Recognition

HCIS Department Chair Lori Brooks was selected to serve on the (Health Information Management Systems Society) HIMSS National Professional Certification Board, the national industry organization with over 100,000 members.  This board administers the HIMSS certification programs and designs the exams. This group oversees the performance of the exams, reviews and refines test items, develops new editions of the exams, contributes to plans for marketing and promoting the certifications, and provides consultation for maintenance of quality programs.

HCIS Associate Professor Cindy Lingerfelt will represent the CSIT Division at the Kansas Leadership Center Conference in February.

Student Success

A 2020 HCIS graduate was hired as the Statistical Research Specialist with Oklahoma Department of Health.

Local Partnership

The HCIS department has secured two new remote internships:  Atchison Community Health Clinic and Children’s Mercy Hospital’s Medication Information Management Department.

Grant

The HCIS Carl Perkins Grant’s resume project had its first student participant hired with the new resume completed through the grant.

The HCIS LinkedIn page gained 60 more followers in Fall 2021 semester.

The Information Technology-Networking department was recently accepted as a member of the United States Cyber Command Academic Engagement Network. We join 84 other colleges and universities. We are one of 14 community colleges. The goal of the network is to partner with the United States Cyber Command and other institutions to meet cyber educational requirements and workforce needs.

 

IT Faculty Andrew Lutz and Caleb Ludwick will attend Blue Valley parent night on January 27th to discuss our programs with interested students and their parents.

Overview

The Cloud Support Analyst is responsible for responding to and resolving customer requests for assistance with technical issues related to their solution.
