HCIS and the MIRM departments hosted approximately 65 students from the Olathe Area Technical Center Wednesday, February 21 at the JCCC Olathe Health Education Center. Students participated in a hands-on activity to explore the electronic health record from both a patient- and provider-perspective, as well as through a lens of medical coding and reimbursement.

Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Designation (CAE-CD)- JCCC has been re-designated by the NSA and DHS as a CAE-CD institution through 2029. Below is an excerpt explaining the CAE-CD designation:

“The Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD) designation indicates that your institution is helping reduce threats to our national infrastructure by promoting higher education and research in cyber defense as well as provide the nation with a pipeline of qualified cybersecurity professionals. All regionally accredited two-year, four-year, and graduate-level institutions in the United States are eligible to apply to become a CAE-CD designated institution. To maintain the CAE-CD designation, an institution or program must apply to be re-evaluated every five academic years.”

Special Events

Faculty from MIRM and HCIS conducted a Health IT Bootcamp during an event with students from the Olathe Area Technical Center on Wednesday, February 21, 2024. This event brought approximately 65 students to the Olathe Health Education Center. During the bootcamp, students were given the opportunity to explore the electronic health record (EHR) from both a patient- and provider-perspective, as well as learn about- and calculate! – healthcare reimbursement.

Medical Coding Internship students participated in a LinkedIn workshop with Joanie Beaulieu from the Career Development Center on Monday, February 19, 2024. Students learned how to build their professional band, and to relay that information clearly and concisely on their individual LinkedIn page. Best practices for engagement and building visibility were shared. Students were encouraged to take advantage of free campus resources, including the photo booth in the JCCC Co-Lab. MIRM faculty attended the Greater Kansas City HIMSS Annual State of Healthcare event on Thursday, February 08, 2024. This event brought-together over 100 local healthcare IT professionals. Chad Austin, President Kansas Hospital Association (KHA) and Jon D. Doolittle, President Missouri Hospital Association (MHA), discussed health IT and its current focus at the state level. Hal Wolfe, President & CEO HIMSS, discussed initiatives at the national level, as well as entertained the group with his “fireside chat.”

HCIS student Shinilja Kuttipuravan is the recipient of the HIMSS Foundation Professional Certification Grant for Minority Professionals and Students. The global grant program, which is designed to help create an inclusive workforce in healthcare information and technology, prepares underrepresented students and professionals to become a Certified Associate in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CAHIMS) or a Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS).

Whitney Bandel (chair of WDDM) will be attending and representing the department at “Digital Scene KC: Experience Design”, hosted by Dimensional Innovations, on January 23rd, 2024. The event will feature panel discussion from leaders at Dimensional Innovations on Experience Design as well as guest exhibitions of work by Derek Scherer (Corpusim) and Steve Biegun (Senior Technical Artist at Industrial Light & Magic).

Community Partnerships

Assistant Professor Allison Hanna is currently working with a representative from H&R Block to set up a summer internship program for students studying web analytics in Web 120.

HCIS Adjunct Professor Kim Fuller has been nominated for the Adjunct Faculty Lieberman Teaching Excellence Award.

The University of Kansas Health System featured two CSIT Healthcare Information Systems students in the monthly KU newsletter. The two students recently concluded a 10-week internship program at TUKHS. Matt Smith, System Director of IT Operations and Support, said of the internship program: “This program has really opened my eyes to how important it is to share what we have learned over the years to those just getting started in the industry. It can be so daunting, not knowing where to start, or what ‘Healthcare IT’ even means. This program truly gave our JCCC interns the ability to see many different aspects of healthcare, IT across numerous teams, and how we as IT professionals truly impact the health system, our customers, and indirectly patient care.”

Medical Coding Internship students welcomed Sara Bible, CDI/Coding Manager, Saint Luke’s Health System (SLHS) on Monday, October 23. Ms. Bible discussed the responsibilities of these departments at SLHS, including productivity standards for medical coders. Ms. Bible also discussed the hiring and onboarding processes at SLHS, easing some of the students’ anxiety associated with job search and interview processes with this knowledge.

MIRM faculty participated in the Olathe 8th Grade Career Expo on Wednesday, November 08. Faculty enjoyed the opportunity to meet with students from across the Olathe school district and discuss CSIT program opportunities.

MIRM 148: Medical Coding Internship students participated in the CSIT Reverse Career Fair on Friday, November 10, 2023. Students met with local employers, including Netsmart Technologies and iResQ. Students had the opportunity to practice their interview skills, including sharing their “elevator pitch,” resume, and industry projects. Students concluded the event with new industry connections, much-appreciated advice for the future, and invitations to share their information with company recruiters!

Following the student internship of Anthony Williams at Sporting Kansas City this semester, Terrance Germany, A/V Manager at Sporting Kansas City and internship supervisor for the class, has joined the WDDM Advisory Board. The department is excited to bring Terrance Germany on board to gain further insights into industry demand for A/V and digital media to enhance the digital media side of our program.

Whitney Bandel gave a presentation to BFA majors enrolled in an “Art Careers Seminar” course at Kansas State University on November 9th. She discussed her career path and transition from traditional Fine Arts to working and teaching in Web Development as well as how to get started in Web Development.

Computer Safety -Don’t Trust the Internet- On October 25th, 2023, 6 students from the JCCC Cybersecurity Club presented on how to stay safe on the internet in the CoLab. Included in the discussion were password managers, shopping online safely, Chat GPT vulnerabilities, endpoint device security, deepfakes, and multi-factor authentication. Approximately 20 members of the campus and community attended the event. The event included a Q & A session. Daniel Long, faculty advisor, helped plan and supported the event.

A recent CSIT Healthcare Information Systems program graduate working for Oracle Cerner recently earned a promotion to Technical Analyst.

HCIS and MIRM programs have twelve students participating in this semester’s Health IT mentorship program where students are matched with Health IT professionals from the Greater Kansas City area to explore professional goals and career pathways and review and practice effective job-search strategies.

The Medical Information & Revenue Management (MIRM) department hosted its Fall Advisory Board Meeting on Friday, October 13, 2023, in conjunction with the Healthcare Information Systems (HCIS) department. Faculty shared current program metrics and provided updates on the program’s digital advertising campaign. The Board discussed the college’s strategic plan, and how it might be supportive of these initiatives. The next meeting will be held Spring 2024.

Patti Frank, Consultants in Practice management and MIRM Advisory Board member, presented E&M Coding 2024 to MIRM Coding III students on Tuesday, October 10, 2023. Ms. Frank reviewed the current process to apply Evaluation and Management (E&M) codes and discussed the importance of proper code application. Students were able to put this information into practice by walking-through several fictitious patient charts.

Maddie Goscha, MIRM student, successfully passed the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) credentialing exam. This is a nationally recognized certification, awarded by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).

Students examined their “Top 5 Strengths” and learned how each strength coincides with a leadership theme. Students also learned how to present their strengths to prospective employers. This class excels in Strategic Thinking and Relationship Building!

The Help Desk Technician II is a part of the Corporate IT Team and responsible for assisting other IT support staff with day-to-day operational duties such as security, backup and recovery, performance and change management, and end user support issues.

A day in the life!

 You will be responsible for the following:

  • Troubleshooting and resolution of end user support issues
  • End user desktop and application support
  • Performs necessary troubleshooting steps to resolve problem or determine appropriate fix
  • Creates trouble tickets using appropriate trouble ticketing system
  • New hire setups to include: Installs desktop hardware and software, installs personal and network printer hardware, assist in maintaining network hardware, software
  • Perform internal IT audits as necessary
  • Target first call resolution to be greater than 60%.
  • Ensure ticket resolution is within WellSky’s approved SLAs.
  • Accept assignments with open, cooperative, positive and team-oriented attitudes.
  • Demonstrate effective oral and written communications with customers, coworkers, and third parties.
  • Comply with the Quality Management System (QMS) and all required regulatory processes in accordance with 21 CFR § 820, ISO 13485:2003 and CMDR (SOR\98-282) as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information, with special emphasis on Protected Health Information (PHI).
  • Comply with Wellsky HIPAA Privacy and Security Practices and all required regulatory processes in accordance with 45 CFR § 160 and 164 as required.
  • Follow applicable Standard Operating Policies and Procedures (SOPP).

  • Must be adept at troubleshooting issues and able to explain solutions to non-technical audiences.
  • Extensive knowledge of PC setup, troubleshooting and operations.
  • Extensive knowledge of Windows 7/10 setup, troubleshooting and operation.
  • Basic understanding of the Desktop LAN protocol TCP/IP.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and with other personnel at all organizational levels
  • Able to understand and follow company internal policies and processes related to IT

The Information Technology program is working on re-designation of the National Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity for Cyber Defense (CAE-CD) designation. The Information Technology-Networking, AAS program was recently approved by the National Security Agency through academic year 2028. The second part of re-designation will occur this Fall 2023.

The WEB department has two students currently interning for the Fall 2023 semester. Terra Brunton will be working as webmaster for Cynthia Lukas, a local independent filmmaker. Anthony Williams is working at Sporting KC as an AV Technician.

 

 

Quest Diagnostics – Shipping and Receiving Clerk (3 positions)

Quest Diagnostics in Lenexa is looking to fill three (3) full-time Shipping and Receiving Clerk positions in the Warehouse Operations area.  This is for the day shift, regular business hours, Monday through Friday.

Educational/Experience Requirement:  High school diploma (or GED) and six (6) months previous materials management (working with equipment, supplies, and paperwork to pick, pack, and ship out) experience.

Job Description:

The Shipping & Receiving Clerk I is responsible for shipping and routing of materials into and out of the Business Unit (BU), as well as the appropriate documentation and data entry.

  • Receive, inspect, verify, process, and route all materials into the facility and off-site facilities (remote sites) and enter the receipts in the Materials Management software system.
  • Notify the Warehouse Manager of any discrepancies of materials versus shippers’ documentation.
  • Prepare shipments, including documentation, for outbound shipments.
  • Manage in the Returned Goods process according to the Returned Goods SOP.
  • Deliver stock to the appropriate staging area for departments.
  • Put warehoused items in the designed storage areas and rotate stock according to receipt date and expiration dates to ensure proper stock rotation and use prior to expiration.
  • Note any short-dated materials upon receipt (less than 30 days of shelf life) and report to the Warehouse Manager to determine any possible actions that may need to be taken.
  • Assist in cycle count and full physical inventory.
  • Comply with all applicable and current Materials and Services Management, Human Resources, Employee Health and Safety, OSHA, CLIA, etc. policies and procedures.
  • Analyze current procedures in place and make recommendations for process improvements to the Warehouse Manager.
  • Assist in order entry, picking, packing, and delivery of both internal and external orders as needed.
  • Assist in record storage and retrieval process as needed
  • Assist in preparation, receipt, and distribution of internal, inbound and external mail as needed.
  • Perform other duties as required.
